History of Self-Determination Programs

The Self-Determination Program (SDP), established in 2013, offers individuals and families a voluntary, person-centered way to choose and direct the services they receive. Through this program, participants design supports that help them achieve their personal goals and thrive in inclusive community settings.

How SDP Works

The Self-Determination Program follows these key steps:

01

Attend an orientation about the Self-Determination Program.

02

Work with your regional center to develop an Individual Program Plan (IPP) that identifies your goals and needed services.

03

Develop a personalized budget based on the amount of money spent on your services in the previous 12 months.

04

Create a spending plan that outlines how you'll use your budget.

05

Find and hire service providers of your choice.

06

Work with a Financial Management Service (FMS) provider who will help manage your budget and pay your service providers.
